Usually 音色 means “tone, timbre” but I used a more general term “sound” here, purely for the aesthetic reason you can say. If it bothers you a lot, feel free to change all the “sound” to “tone” or “timbre”.
I also tried my best to find out what was sung before “mezzopiano”, sadly, never managed to, if anyone knows please let me know!
